The Metluma Edit from Dr Nic: Struggle To Enforce Boundaries? Let’s Talk About It
4 minute readIf you’ve sat in one of my consults lately, there’s a good chance we’ve talked about boundaries.
Not the “say no more” kind of boundaries you read about online – the real, everyday ones. Telling your partner you need ten minutes alone before you can be a decent human. Leaving a work call on time even when someone’s still talking. Saying “I can’t take that on right now” without a three-paragraph apology attached.
So many of the women I see in clinic have spent decades being the person everyone else relies on – and perimenopause has a way of making that unsustainable. The patience runs thinner. The tolerance for overcommitting drops. And honestly? I think that’s your body telling you something worth listening to, not a personality flaw to fix.
That’s exactly what we’re unpacking in this month’s AMA – what boundaries actually look like in midlife, and why enforcing them isn’t selfish, it’s self-preservation.
If you’ve ever said yes when you meant no and felt your whole nervous system regret it, this one’s for you.
Warmest,
Dr Nic, Specialised GP

🎤 Free Upcoming AMA: Enforcing Boundaries Protecting Your Time and Energy in Midlife
📅 Thursday, 24th September 2026 | 12PM AEST | Live on StreamYard | FREE
Midlife often means saying yes to everyone but yourself: work demands, ageing parents, teenagers, partners, and a body going through its own transition. This AMA is about learning how to say no without guilt, protect your energy, and set boundaries that actually stick.
We’ll unpack:
Why boundaries get harder (not easier) in midlife
How to enforce boundaries at work without damaging relationships
Practical scripts for saying no at home
When “boundaries” are really about burnout, and what to do instead
Hosted by Dr Nic Avard, with special guest:
🩺 Divya Bannerjee, Psychologist at Mindplace, who works with women navigating stress, burnout and life transitions
This is a safe, judgement-free space to bring your real questions – whether you’ve never set a boundary in your life or you’re just tired of the guilt that comes with trying.
📊 Your Cycle Data, Decoded
Every day in consults, I ask women the same questions – when did your last period start? Have your pain levels changed? What patterns have you noticed?
Usually, the honest answer is “I’m not sure.” And that’s not a failing on your part – it’s simply hard to hold that much detail in your head month to month.
This is exactly why cycle tracking matters so much to me clinically, not just personally. The more accurate data you bring into a consult, the faster I can connect the dots – between your cycle, your symptoms, and what’s actually going on hormonally – and the more personalised your care plan becomes.
That’s part of why we’ve partnered with Clue. I love the reports you can bring me as a feature of your Clue Plus subscription – tracking that data becomes second nature, whatever stage of your health journey you’re at. We love their reports
